Peer Review of Educational Practice (PREP) Report and Action Plan: Digital Compendium
Capability area #1 — Build teaching capability
1. Development of skills
I have actively pursued professional development opportunities to enhance my skills in educational practice, leadership, and innovation. Notable training courses I have completed include:
- PREP Process for Reviewees: This training has equipped me with the ability to provide and receive constructive feedback from peers, which is invaluable for refining teaching methods, fostering a culture of collaboration, and strengthening leadership capabilities.
- HDR Supervisors — Management of Student Progress: These sessions have deepened my understanding of overseeing the progress of Higher Degree by Research (HDR) students, enabling me to effectively mentor and guide them, identify common obstacles, and provide essential support for their success.
By actively engaging in these training courses, I have not only developed essential skills but have also demonstrated a commitment to continuous improvement in my educational practice, leadership, and innovative teaching approaches.

2. Knowledge transfer
Since joining Curtin University in 2015, I have had the privilege of supervising a diverse cohort of undergraduate, postgraduate, honour, and PhD students, including: (Please click
here to view a full list of students and supervision stats).
- 56 undergraduate and masters students for MATH3004, MATH5001, MATH5003, MATH6001 and MATH6004.
- 4 honour students for STAT4000, STAT4001, NPSC3000, and NPSC4001, especially Mr Aden Pegler obtained first-class honour.
- 13 PhD students to completion (2 as main supervisor and 11 as co-supervisor). Particularly, Mr Fahad Aljuaydi, the PhD under my supervision, received a commendation from the Chancellor of the university for the high quality of the thesis. The letter is shown on the left.
- Additionally, I have also served as a cross-university co-advisor for 6 PhD students from Mahidol University. The following is the list of students.
These experiences have allowed me to employ a range of effective teaching strategies to facilitate knowledge transfer and skill development among my students. These strategies include:
- Setting clear expectations: Right from the start, I establish clear expectations regarding thesis or dissertation requirements, timelines, academic standards, and research objectives. Emphasising the importance of originality and research ethics ensures students are well-informed and motivated.
- Regular meetings and communication: I prioritise regular meetings with students to discuss progress, address challenges, and outline the next steps in their academic journey. I am readily accessible through email and other communication channels to address queries promptly.
- Feedback and constructive criticism: I am committed to providing timely and constructive feedback on students' work. This approach encourages continuous improvement and enhances the quality of their research.
- Customised approach: Recognising the uniqueness of each student, including their individual strengths, weaknesses, and learning styles, I tailor my teaching methods to meet their specific needs. This personalised approach fosters a supportive and productive learning environment.
- Time management and organisation skills: I guide students in developing essential time management and organisational skills, equipping them with the tools needed to excel in their academic pursuits.
These teaching strategies have not only elevated unit satisfaction rates (please see 2019-2023 eVALUate results below) and students' achievement rates, but they have also had a positive impact on facilitating knowledge transfer and skill development among my colleagues through mentoring and supervision.
- Advanced Numerical Analysis
- Supply Chain Modelling and Optimisation
